Mummypowder: V. Strange (2003)

Favourite songs:

Another Good Year, December, I Will Wait, The Second Time, Trying To Ride A Donkey, Time To Recompense

The head mummy Janne Lehtinen is one of my favourite finnish songwriters and their debut album 'The Heavyweight Champions' could be the most underrated finnish album of the 90's. It's been four years since the debut and now finally we have a follow-up on our hands. Actually also the third album is already in works and should come out in the beginning of 2004.

At first listen I was slightly disappointed with 'V.Strange'. Mainly because expectations were sky high and the material on V.Strange is a bit more artistic than what I had used to hear from them. Janne even said on their website that the instant hit material was delibarately left to the next album. On V.Strange Janne had the chance to totally forget all the commercial aspects and make an album following his artistic vision. Still V.Strange is not just some weird art album. It's a rock album. There's just some more experimental material included like the spoken-word piece "Pinkish" and also there are some short soundscapes in between.

After a couple of listens, V.Strange was not a disappointment anymore. It's definitely a grower that seems to get better after every listen. There are perfect pop songs like 'I Will Wait' and 'December' that all pop fans will appreciate. Beautiful 'Time To Recompense' shows how marvellous voice Janne has. Spoken-word piece "Pinkish" is also really good one although the song won't live that long. 'Trying To Ride A Donkey is the song that could be a hit and 'Another Good Year' is another great track. On the negative side, I feel that the album is still a bit inconsistent for my taste. Nevertheless, V.Strange is extremely highly recommended and a great piece of music to listen to before the next Mummy album will hit the jackpot. I promise to watch Steven Seagal's filmography through three times, if the next mummy album isn't one of the very best albums ever released in this country. I've heard the early versions of seven of the songs that will be on it and I was really blown away because of those songs. So stay tune for that.
