The Get Up Kids: On A Wire (Vagrant Records, 2002)

Favourite Songs:

Overdue, Let The Reigns Go Loose, The Worst Idea

The Get Up Kids is one of the hundreds of bands that I've found while listening to Räkärodeo. I liked the songs that I heard from their last album Something To Write Home About, but it took me this long to really understand how good they are. The fact, that they now have made a simple and more song-oriented pop album and left the emo and punk-rock influences to a minumun, might have something to do with my enlightment. So needless to say that I think Get Up Kids are going to the right direction. They might lose a few of their old fans, but I'm confident that this fabulous pop album won't get unnoticed among the fans of timeless pop music. Opening track, acoustic-driven Overdue is catchy and one of the prettiest and most heartbreakin' songs on the album. Let The Reigns Go Loose is stunning. In a fair world it would top all charts and sell a million copies as a single. A definete (should-be) hit. One song that I also would like to mention is The Worst Idea. This organ-driven piece could even be my favourite song of the whole album. Each time Matt Pryor sings the line "sing me a tune / wasn't this bond built forever?" my heart misses one beat. And rest of the album is almost as fabulous as these three songs. It strongly seems that On A Wire will be my record of the year.
