Club 8: Strangely Beautiful (Labrador, 2003)

Favourite Songs:

Cold Hearts, This Is The Morning, The Next Step You'll Take, Stay By My Side

The only negative thing first. I don't like the first single of the album "Saturday Night Engine" at all. In fact the whole track annoys me. The mixture of those loops and guitars just make me dizzy. I know if you're into stuff like st.etienne, you probably love it. Unfortunately pop with dance club rhythms have never been my thing.

On a brighter note, the rest of the albums is actually filled with bright hooks, beautiful vocals and above all, great songs. Yes, there's still loops, rhythms etc, because it's a part of their 'sound' but it's not the main ingredient. Johan Angergård who has once again written, produced and recorded the whole album has a great vision how to arrange the songs so that they can get the most out of them. Karolina's soft vocal melodies leads the songs and all the different instruments are cleverly mixed to make it sound rich. Sometimes, as a kind of lo-fi fan, I would like them to make things sound a bit more simpler. Just acoustic guitar and Karolina's voice would sound freakin good to me. Well I stop complaining because I find everything except the single worth listening to. Well that was a huge understatement. Actually there are 10 great songs on the album. Beautiful, warm indie music. Chasing Dorotea's Christopher Sander is a guest vocalist on 'This Is The Morning', which could have been the best song on the album. Unfortunately it's just a one minute long little treat, but it's still so undeniable charming and beautiful song and let's not even start to praise how adorable it sounds to hear Christopher and Karolina singing together.
