The Anchor Song, Tuva Song, A Long Time Ago, In April
In 1998, the leader of Chasing Dorotea, Christopher Sander decided to
start making music that sounded like Red House Painters. That is not a
bad place to begin and a few years later this quite awesome debut saw
the light. The album as a whole is not a perfect masterpiece, but it does
contain some really beautiful and magical moments. Opening track 'The
Anchor Song' is charming innocent tune with the most beautiful boy-girl
vocal interplay I've heard in ages. Christopher and swedish actress Tuva
Novotny sing the song together and they create something magical and
the song dances quietly in to your heart. And the lyrics are so charming.
I suppose some cynical guy might call them a bit naive, but a sentimental
popster like myself find them really captivating (You're the parachute
that saves me, when I feel the need to jump, You're the records that I
crave, and you sing the songs I need to hear). Beautiful 'A Long Time
Ago' shows awesome richness of melody and 'Tuva Song' is pure magic. Gently
strummed guitar and longing vocals really get under your skin. 'In April'
resumes the combination of longing lyrics and quiet minumal instrumentation.
To counterbalance the quiet captivating moments, this self-titled album
contains a few pop songs like fabulous 'All I Want'. All the songs aren't
equally wonderful, but at least 'Dreamer' and 'Memory' aren't far behind
the ones already mentioned. hmm, that's already 7 out of 11. Chasing Dorotea
have indeed created a beautiful debut. Even just 'The Anchor Song' is
a reason enough to get this album.
