Review: Heartjet – Goodbye, Stan EP

Heartjet: Goodbye, Stan EP (2010)

I’ve written about this finnish power pop duo a few times, but Heartjet deserves another push. After all, onechord.net exists because of bands like Heartjet. Nowadays there just aren’t too many bands around that are influenced by the greatest bands/artists ever like The Posies, Jason Falkner, Brendan Benson, Matthew Sweet and Nada Surf. Therefore when new one enters the picture and shows that they can also write great songs themselves, it is a huge deal here at the onechord headquarters.

Goodbye, Stan EP is only available as a digital download, but it’s definitely worth buying even for those old bastards like myself who still prefer those round thingies. Sure it’s not the greatest power pop release you’ll ever hear, but they are pretty damn good already. If you have any interest towards 90’s power pop scene etc, I’m sure you will enjoy this. The songs are great and the harmonies are beautiful. It ranges from The Posies-influenced rockin’ power pop towards almost folky alternative pop and everything sounds really good. My favourite is still the powerpoppin’ greatness of Do You Doubt It?. The influences clearly shine through, but who cares when the influences couldn’t be any better and the song is marvellous. Goodbye, Stan is a really good debut EP. I’m looking forward for more.

Favourite EPs of the Year

This is not really a list. I didn’t buy enough EPs to make a top 10, but there were two little discs that I really loved and therefore I want to mention them.

Nopat: Kaupungit ihmiset

If Kaupungin ihmiset had been an album, it would have made the top ten on the album list. If there had been “the best finnish releases of the year” -list  on this blog, Kaupungin ihmiset would have taken the second spot after A Cab To The City. This is a fantastic little disc and Nopat can really turn an everyday struggle into stress-free and serene beauty. They are the perfect antidote against all those “self-made hurry” situations that most of us are so good at creating. This is warm & beautiful in the vein of Excuses Of Travellers. What a lovely release.

Heartjet: Goodbye, Stan

Heartjet’s digital only EP Goodbye, Stan introduces a new finnish power pop band/duo. There certainly aren’t too many of those around nowadays and therefore I’m obviously excited about the fact that there’s a new power pop band in the country. However, that excitement wouldn’t last very long, if they weren’t any good at it. Thankfully there’s no need to worry about that. They are pretty damn good already and all five songs on the EP are wonderful. Extremely highly recommended.

News: Heartjet

If I’ve been a little lazy lately, it’s got to stop now. Some great things are going on. Same kind of things that made me start One Chord To Another nine years ago. Finnish pop bands are releasing wonderful music. The new Bookends album mentioned in the earlier news entry proved to be marvellous and I’m really looking forward to the next FOTM at Pikku-Torre on 3rd of december. Bookends & Markus Perttula share the stage. I will be (part of) the FOTM DJ Team.

Heartjet have just released a digital EP entitled Goodbye Stan and I love it. You will probably love it as well, if melodic powerpoppin’ goodness is the kind of thing you are looking for. This is the debut release from this fairly new pop duo and things certainly look good, because all five songs on the EP are pretty amazing. My own favourite at the moment is Do You Doubt It? which sounds like a perfect The Posies and Penniless symbiosis. The EP is available at iTunes, 7Digital, meteli.net etc. Check out the full list of digital retailers on their myspace and/or listen all the songs on their bandcamp page. Extremely highly recommended and marvellous stuff like some cool people might say.
