Monday was a great day for fans of power pop, because Lojinx released David Myhr’s solo debut Soundshine. The expectations were sky high, because David Myhr used to play in The Merrymakers, which is one of my all-time favourite power pop groups. Thankfully Soundshine fills those almost unrealistic expectations extremely well. This really is pure pop perfection and it’s no wonder that the album has gotten a fantastic reception in the pop-minded blogosphere. For example both Powerpopaholic and Absolute Powerpop think it’s the the album of the year so far. I can pretty much agree. Even though my addiction to Mörönsyötti has reached such heights that Soundshine probably can’t knock it out from the album of the year spot, this definitely is my favourite pure pop album of the year (and the opening track Never Mine is a strong candidate for the song of the year award). This catchy-as-hell pop heaven has more beautiful melodies than there are country songs about Carolina. I enjoyed the lyrical side of things as well. I have to mention the opening lines of Wanderlust. Sometimes I’m able to make art out of indecisiveness and therefore the line “I used to think I had a problem making up my mind / Now I’m not sure anymore” just made me smile. If you are looking for timeless melodies and harmony-filled pop music, you really can’t go wrong with Soundshine. Perfect spring soundtrack and if you are listening to this I guarantee that even the nastiest sudden cold spell can’t remove the sunshine from your heart.
Flavour of the Month 2.3.2012: David Myhr (SWE), Heartjet
There’s a very special Flavour of the Month taking place at Pikku-Torre, Turku on friday 2nd of march, 2012. Ex-Merrymaker David Myhr will be playing a solo concert with great Finnish duo Heartjet as the support act.
I’ve already praised The Merrymakers enough (ok, that might not be possible, they were so brilliant), so let’s focus on things happening now. David Myhr’s solo debut Soundshine came out in Japan last december and will be released in Europe at the end of march by the great british pop label Lojinx (Farrah, FOW, Brendan Benson, Pugwash…). I’ve not heard the full album yet, but based on the first outtakes, David Myhr is in top form and capable of creating timeless melodies and insanely catchy pop songs. Check out these videos if you don’t take my word for it. And do come to the show at Pikku-Torre on 2nd of march.

And there’s more. David Myhr will have a great support act. Finnish Heartjet might be still a bit unknown, but that’s just criminal. Their digital releases Goodbye Stan EP and Grace/World single are both excellent pop releases. Listen to below.

David Myhr to Flavour of the Month!
I’m extremely excited about this. David Myhr will play at our Flavour of the Month club on 2.3.2012 (Pikku-Torre, Turku). David Myhr is a marvellous pop tunesmith and used to play in one of my favourite pop groups The Merrymakers. Their albums No Sleep ’til Famous and Bubblegun are power pop classics. David Myhr is currently getting ready to release his solo debut Soundshine in Europe. Lucky Japanese pop fans have already been able to enjoy the record, because december 2011 was the Japanese release date. The first singles Got You Where He Wanted and Looking For A Life are both excellent. Check them out below and come to the show on 02.03.2012.
Flavour Of The Monthin kevättalvi
Turkulaisen kitaraindieklubi Flavour Of The Monthin kevättalvi tuo Pikku-Torren legendaariselle lavalle niin kotimaista kuin ruotsalaistakin alan huippuosaamista.
Helmikuun klubi-ilta on perjantaina 3.2. ja tuolloin esiintyjinä nähdään ja kuullaan tamperelaista americana/folk/country-yhtye Ochre Roomia sekä turkulaista laulaja-lauluntekijää Markus Perttulaa, jonka lähes jeffbuckleymaiset laulusuoritukset ovat aina komeaa kuultavaa.
Maaliskuussa luvassa on korkea-arvoinen ruotsalaisvieras poplaulunkirjoittamisen päämiestasolta, kun 90-luvulla The Merrymakers-yhtyeessä vaikuttanut David Myhr saapuu Flavour Of The Monthiin näyttämään, miten melodiat rakennetaan ja laulut lauletaan The Beatlesin, Jellyfishin ja muiden huipputekijöiden tyyliin. Kyseessä on yksi Flavour Of The Monthin 13-vuotisen taipaleen kovimmista esiintyjäkaappauksista. Myhrin lämmittelyakti perjantain 2.3. keikalle on vielä varmistamatta; vapaamuotoisia hakemuksia otetaan vastaan osoitteessa mikko.lappalainen@turku.fi!
