TOP of the Week 24

The Most Useless Lists of the week or things I loved during the week.

ALBUMS:

1. Jason Lytle: Yours Truly, The Commuter
Grandaddy goes solo and I like it a lot.

2. Radio City: Class Of ’77
Can I say classic 70’s power pop if it wasn’t released until now?

3. Cats On Fire: Our Temperance Movement
This is my favourite album of the year so far and therefore it remains on the playlist. Kind of sad that the average life for a new record seem to be something like two weeks in this household, because I continuosly buy records and therefore need to move on to new things way too fast. Thank God I’m even able to stick to something as perfect as this for a longer time.

4. Blue: S/T
This remains on the playlist as well. It’s a stunning pop album. Maybe I could remove 1-2 songs from it to make it pure perfection, but it gets rather close the way it is.

5. Samantha Crain & The Midnight Shivers: Songs In The Night
I still enjoy it.

SONGS:

1. Radio City: Don’t Mistake Love
2. Janne Laurila: Heili
3. Nopat: Rauhaton
4. Jason Lytle: Birds Encouraged Him
5. Bob McFadden & Dor: The Mummy

We were listening to an old Räkärodeo show in the car when driving to Keuruu last thursday and that old classic The Mummy made us both smile. This wonderful song has been stuck in my head ever since, so I want to share this beautiful piece of music with you. You’ll find it for example here.

Finnish music videos from the vaults part 4: Summer

The theme of the evening is summer and these three bands have been part of my summer soundtrack for a long time.

Karkkiautomaatti: Seikkailuun
The lead single of their third and last album Suudelmilla that was released in 1998. Suudelmilla was and still is one of the greatest finnish albums ever released. Eventhough Seikkailuun isn’t my favourite track of the album, it’s still a marvellous song.

Poverty Stinks: Summer Will Never End
Poverty Stinks is also a perfect music for sunny outdoor picnics. A criminally overlooked band that created a bunch of great pop albums and a huge amount of perfect pop songs. This single Summer Will Never End from 1993 is certainly one of them.

Aknestik: Kesällä ei mennä nukkumaan
Aknestik is a band that I rarely listen to during the other three seasons, but in the summertime albums like Onni and especially Säätiedotuksia merenkulkijoille seem like the best thing ever. This summer anthem is from the album Onni which was released back in 1994.

Janne Laurila & Nopat

As previously mentioned, Janne Laurila’s album Kultaisia pisteitä is due out in september. However, you can already take a sneak preview, because today Janne added three new songs from the upcoming album to his myspace. Oh and now Janne’s band has a name. It isn’t called Nopat eventhough that made a good sounding title to this blog entry. It’s called Tuhlaajapojat. So look out for Janne Laurila ja Tuhlaajapojat concerts next fall if you want to see some of the finest live performances this country has to offer.

Nopat also added some great new songs. Tune in their myspace to experience their greatness. Or come to Flavour Of The Month’s summer edition where Nopat share the stage with College Fall (aus) and Jaakko Söderström (Ben’s Diapers frontman’s first solo gig). The event will take place at Pikku Torre, Turku on 27th of june. More information about this FOTM event later on, but now you can already mark it to your calendars. See ya there.
