OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #115

Another week, another new music weekly.

A super slow release week due to thanksgiving week I presume. Plus we are approaching Christmas and AOTY time, so release schedule starts to slow down in general too. Anyway, therefore there’s a bit more reappearances from the past week than normally.

I’ll start with the Finnish ones this week, because there’s a really important one from Fenno-Swedish songwriter Nightbird. A pretty world class stuff, if you ask me. So if you didn’t get enough new American folk and blues albums this week, give a spin to Travelin’ Baby. It’s a treasure. Other Finnish beauties on the list and my radar this week are an album from Hot Heros feat Iro Haarla, EP from Tiiu Helinä and singles from J.Kajan, Markus Perttula, Sepikka and Joni Ekman. The playlist also includes Jere Valkonen album from a week ago and revisits Antero Kaksikäsi single from the past week.

Not a whole lot on the international albums and EPs front, but a few beauties for sure. A new album from folk singer-songwriter Richard Allen was a lovely surprise. I loved his In the Front Room album in 2014 and this new one sounds gorgeous on quick listen. I can’t wait to give a more thorough spin soon. Probably all songs from Grace Gillespie’s new EP have been on this playlist during the past year. That is now out too. We also have a surprise album from Scott H. Biram, Max Bien Kahn’s stay at home demos plus Emily Barker has a new EP with three versions of Machine. Nick Dittmeier released an extended version of his 2019 EP. I also included wino-strut & friends. I mentioned it on the release week a few weeks back, but it wasn’t on Spotify back then. It is now, so I included it on the playlist this time. Luluc album came out in October, but I missed that at the time completely.

And finally the international singles. There’s a new one from long time favorite Matt Paxton. That matters every time. Never heard of Clara Mann before today, but her single destroyed me in a good way. Amazing song and can’t wait to hear more songs. Desolation Horse is another new one that hit a home run. There’s an album coming out in December on American Standard Time. Little Mazarn, Vilma Flood and Aaron Lee Tasjan released great new songs. Jacob Faurholt covered Sparklehorse and if you are looking for first class pop songs, check out the new track from The Boys of Perpetual Nervousness. As usual, everything is worthy of a namedrop, but you’ll find them from the list below. Oh yeah and there’s already been a ton of gorgeous Christmas singles and albums. I don’t want to put them on the weekly playlist so early on and therefore I made another playlist for the yuletunes. Otherwise I’ll forget them before I even want to listen to them. If you are already on the festive mood, you’ll find that playlist here.

I think that it is for this week. Thank you again for following this little blog. It matters. You matter. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #114

Another week, another new music weekly.

This one was a giant release week, because some of my absolute favorite songwriters released new albums. I’m referring to J.E. Sunde and John Calvin Abney. I’ve loved their songs for a long time and the new albums are wonderful. Actually I’ve loved the music of Adam Selzer even longer and I was thrilled to see he released a solo record. If you are a really long time reader of this little music blog, you might remember his old a band called Norfolk & Western. I loved them back in the early 00s and Dusk In Cold Parlours is one of my all-time favorite albums. Give that one listen, if you are not familiar with it. That last song still stops time. A perfect album. Anyway, back to 2020 and the new solo album which also sounds great. I look forward to diving into it more thoroughly once I’ve done with this weekly round up thing-y. Oh yeah and that The Parson Red Heads album I mentioned a week ago is now streaming here in Europe too, so it’s on the playlist this time around. Moving on from long time favorites to new favorites. These Kacey Johansing, Laura Fell and Badge Epogue Ensemble albums sound fabulous on quick listen. And that’s just to name a few. Here’s a list of all new album/EP releases that were on my radar this week.

J.E. Sunde – 9 songs About Love (Vietnam)
John Calvin Abney – Familiar Ground (Black Mesa Records)
Adam Selzer – Slow Decay (Jealous Butcher Records)
Kacey Johansing – No Better Time (Night Bloom Records)
Laura Fell – Safe From me (Balloon Machine)
The Parson Red Heads – Lifetime of Comedy (You Are The Cosmos / Fluff & Gravy Records)
Badge Epogue Ensemble – Self Help (Telephone Explosion Records)
Partner – Never Give Up (You’ve Changed Records)
Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys – Late Night Essentials -Nov 9th release, but first time here
Tim Bluhm – Hag Heaven (Blue Rose Music)
Kelsey Waldon -They’ll Never Keep Us Down EP (Oh Boy Records)
Elan Noon – Colour Story
I Am Oak – Odd Seeds Pt1 (Snowstar Records) -Full album in December
Brenna Lowrie – Loss Leader EP -Jun 23rd release, missed it at the time
Ryan Burns & The Local Ghosts – Static Year
Jack Name – Magic Touch (Mexican Summer)
Ward Davis – Black Cats and Crows
Josh King – The Shed, SpoonKing
Emily Edrosa – Another Wave Is Coming (Park The Van)
Weezy Ford – All At Once (Field Electric Recordings)
King Hannah – Tell Me Your Mind and I’ll Tell You Mine EP (City Slang)
Huttch – Quick Fix EP
Slight Of – Other People (Dadstache Records) -28th of Aug release, shared the single failed the album release.

And outside of the streaming services, we’ll have at least a new album from Freschard. That’s always something love and cherish.

Moving on to the Finnish stuff. The only album release is the new one from Jerry Lindqvist, but it’s a really good one. As an addition to that there’s a mighty good run of singles from Janne Laurila, Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus, Antero Kaksikäsi, J.Kajan, Mauri Dark, Eerie Deer, Iisa, Ruissalo Amping, Radio Supernova. I was also ready to praise the new Nightbird album, because I thought it was a Friday release. However, it’s actually a 24th of November release, so you can check that out midweek if you want to hear a magnificent Finnish album.

Finally the international should-be hits aka singles. A couple of big album announcements from The Weather Station and Michael Feuerstack. If this blog and world still exists at the end of 2021, you’ll find those from my AOTY 2021 lists. Wonderful songs once again. Other personal favorites like Andy Shauf, Mariel Buckley, Aaron Frazer, Drew Beskin also have fabulous songs this week. Brian Johannesen released two amazing new songs. Duff Thompson is a new one for me, but I’m very fond of his new singles and look forward to hearing the album in December. As usual everything else would also be worthy of a mention, but you’ll find them all from the list below.

I think that is all for this week. Such a lovely week of new releases. Thank you songwriters for keeping me relative sane during these weird times. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #113

Another week, another new music weekly.

Sorry for the small delay. I’ve been suffering with small flu symptoms for the past few days. Had a covid test too, which was negative. So just an ordinary one. At least this time around. I still suspect that I might have had it back in March, because I was sick for eight weeks with what was by far the weirdest sickness of my life. And even after the so-called “recovery”, I’ve felt like absolute horseshit all year long with freaky symptoms that come and go. Since mid-March my year has been a total nightmare with awful night sweats, chest pains, headaches, tachycardia and what not. There’s no way to tell what I really had in the spring, because you couldn’t get a test early on. But whatever the hell it was, I never fully recovered from it. That’s kind of why there has only been this weekly post on the blog and why I’ve been horrible at answering to your emails and messages. I just haven’t had enough energy to do much more than just trying get through each day. So sorry about the lack of updates and horrible correspondence. But enough with the personal mumbo jumbo. Here’s a very quick run of this week’s new releases.

I’ve spent most time this weekend with Terra Spencer’s beautiful new album. It has been the remedy for my flu-ish mind. Other big things this week for me are the new album from Trevor Beld Jimenez and the EPs from Gianna Lauren and Molly Parden. The week also gave us new great albums from Gwenifer Raymond, Spencer Cullum, The Flat Five, Wayne Graham, Charlie Kaplan, Chris Stapleton and Gillian Welch (rarities comp) plus EPs from Brittain Ashford & Matt Bauer and Lambchop. Oh yeah and there’s a new album from The Parson Red Heads at least in the US. I think there might be a later Euro release, because it’s not available on Spotify over here.

In Finland, we have more home recordings from Veli. What a sweet EP. There’s also new albums from Maustetytöt and KO:MI plus singles from Nightbird, Gim Kordon, EPILÄ and Johannes Faustus.

And finally international singles. There’s a new single from Teenage Fanclub. A kind of big deal for me, because The Posies, Teenage Fanclub and The Sugarrush are my all-time favorite bands. There’s also the final single from the John Calvin Abney album that’s due out next week, Lucero cover from Heather Valley, new beautiful ones from Pony Bradshaw, LadyCouch, Small Houses and so forth.

That’s it for this week. Back to bed. Love from a distance.
