Album of The Month: Widower – Fool Moon

widower

My biggest addiction right now. Widower’s Fool Moon has been out for a while now, but I just bought it a week or two ago. I don’t know why I waited so long, but thankfully I saw the light now. This is going to be a last minute entry to my albums of the year list. It’s just so beautiful. Almost spiritual, because sometimes the melodies might be as close to Finnish church hymns as american folk rock songs. I find the album amazingly beautiful, but maybe it’s fair to warn that the beauty of the album is often rather devastating. Actually Kevin Large kind of rips your heart out sometimes. But even then he does it delicately and compassionately and he doesn’t forget to put the heart back in and make you feel more whole than before. I’m not sure has any record moved me as deeply as this one during the year. There’s a couple of songs that are not that special and therefore this has to settle a place in the top 10 and won’t be the album of the year contender. However, the finest songs like Thoroughbred, Grasp, Oh Catherine, My Catherine and Almost, Always, All Yours are just heavenly.

This is Oh Catherine, My Catherine from Fool Moon that was released by the great Mama Bird Recording Company on 30th of July.

Album of the Month: Jeremy Squires – When Will You Go..

jeremysqwhen

Jeremy Squires released his new album When Will You Go… November 5th, 2013. Jeremy is a North Carolinian singer-songwriter that has been featured here several times during the year. There’s something in his music that really finds the core of my heart. The songs might not always be filled with happy thoughts, but somehow I find his music comfortable and beautiful. Perhaps Jeremy helps me to tackle my own demons and guides me through the darker times. I know it might sound very unappreciative (but on the contrary, it’s one of the highest praises I can think of), but I’ve been actually sleeping with this record during the last weeks. Not making love to it though. After a tough day at the factory, there’s just nothing better to do than fall on the couch, put the headphones on and let Jeremy’s warm voice travel through my weary head. Then an hour or two later I wake up with Jeremy still singing in my head. That’s my kind of nap these days.

The new album features the highly talented Anna-Lynne Williams (Lotte Kestner). She sings backing vocals on three songs. I think Central Nervous Station EP remains my favourite Jeremy Squires release, because it’s how I found Jeremy and it has become so dear to me. However, When Will You Go is just as great and totally worth of that Album of the Month spot. This single Oblivious is my favourite song of the new album. Listen to it below and stream/buy the whole thing on Jeremy’s bandcamp.

Album of the Month: Austin Lucas – Stay Reckless

austinlucas

There was also several other great possibilities for the new album of the month spot. I’m very much into The Lieblings album and I’m more than just a little obsessed with the upcoming Marine Dreams album. But then there’s a new Austin Lucas album and in the end, the choice is rather easy. I love this guy. His two previous albums Somebody Loves You and A New Home In The Old World are very dear to me and the new release, Stay Reckless is probably his finest album to date. Absolutely fantastic from the get-go to the last note. A great blend of americana, country and rock’n’roll. I suppose some country purists might struggle with this, because at times Stay Reckless might be closer to Hüsker Dü than Willie Nelson. Ok, that namedropping got more than a little out of hand. On a more serious note, whether it’s blast of countrified rock’n’roll or a beautiful country ballad, Austin nails it perfectly each time. This time Austin also had one of the best bands in the world as his backing band in the studio. Austin Lucas with Glossary. That collaboration was a match made in rock’n’roll heaven. This is Alone in Memphis from the amazing new Austin Lucas album that just came out on New West Records.
