OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #77

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Let’s kick off with the Finnish material this time around, because the new Laura Moisio album was my favourite release of the week. My expectations were sky high after the fabulous advance singles, but somehow this manages to live up to them. A remarkable album. Another one that I’m waiting eagerly is the Kalevi Suopursu album that’s out next week. We got a first single this week. That’s another big highlight, but there’s also great new singles from Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus, Vasas flora och fauna, Masa Orpana feat Kielo Kärkkäinen, Treemer, Joensuu 1685 and an album cut from the new Samoaja album.

And then the rest of the world. The week gave new album froms Sadler Vaden (a great solo album from the 400 Unit guitarist), The Mastersons, Swamp Dogg, Iji, Emily Duff, Dean Fields, Nadia Reid, Bergen, Geoff Gordon, Addy, U.S. Girls, The James Hunter Six, Bacchae, Ron Pope, Mosses, Stephen Malkmus, Jonathan Wilson, Mariecke Borger and William Tyler (soundtrack). Plus EPs from Donna Blue, D.B. Rouse, Mary Bragg and My Sister, My Brother.

There’s also lots of really special singles. A week of album announcements and we got the first singles from the forthcoming albums by Damien Jurado, Courtney Marie Andrews, Adeline Hotel and American Aquarium. There’s also new wonderful advance singles from Caleb Caudle, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit and Jess Jocoy. I really dig the cover by Fiver too. Which is no surprise, because I love Fiver, Dillard & Clark and You’ve Changed Records. Oh and new Carla Geneve too and well I could just namedrop all of these.

And a reminder that while these streaming services are great for the introduction and for expanding the listening habits, supporting the artists by buying the vinyl / CD / download is really important. Especially right now, because this current coronavirus situation adds a whole new level of stress and uncertainty for the musicians whose livelihood depends on touring. Touring is hard work even under normal circumstances (continuously amazes me, because I’m worn out after a couple of days of travel and that’s just for leisure. They do it for months in a row and work each night to make our lives better). Now they have to deal with a lot of uncertainty and possible last minute cancellations. So let’s help them out as much as we can.

That’s it for this week. This playlist too long even though I left some goodies out. Sorry about that, but I think it’s not a huge issue. Everyone can listen as much as they like and skip the rest. Back next week with this release round up and hopefully before that a couple of sets of those other kind of short posts that I’ve done lately. Love love love.

Playlist link

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.
