OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #167

Another week, another new music weekly.

Also another year. Not much will change. This new music weekly will go on as usual unless I finally realize how little it makes sense to spend hours every weekend into something that has so little significance. Thankfully I’m too stubborn to understand that. At least for now this is on Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music. My Apple Music trial will run out in a few weeks and Tidal in month in a half. After that I need to decide what to do, because my low end factory job doesn’t pay enough to justify me subscribing to multiple streaming services. But at least for a few more weeks, this is available in all three services. This first new music weekly of the year has some late 2021 releases too, because this was on hold for few weeks. I probably forgot something, because I didn’t really keep notes during the hiatus. Sorry about that.

The album of the week is the new North Atlantic Explorers album Night Owls. Vancouver-based songwriter Glenn D’Cruze and his band sure set the bar high for 2022. Such a beautiful album. From the earlier weeks I’ve spent a lot of time with Jake Balzer’s EP and the album by The Craig Torso Show. This week we also got beautiful albums from Jeff Tobias and Daniel Bachman (covers album) plus an EP from Sis. Brandon Padier EP was a 31st of December release. Oh yeah and on Bandcamp there’s a new cover album from Michael Feuerstack.

The big one from Finland is the debut album from J.Kajan. There’s also a run of lovely singles from J.Karjalainen, Treemer, Palor, Bad Sauna and Itä-Hollola Installaatio. Late 2021 magic are the album from Arwi of Lovers and EP/single from Kuningas Koningas.

And finally the international singles. The favorites here are the new songs from Maya De Vitry, Jacob Miller, Jacksonport, Marjorie and Jason McCue. Just to name a few. There’s gold throughout the list. For example among the last few, there is a late 2021 gem from Elijah Johnston. Plenty of cover magic too and you’ll find some Townes Van Zandt, Patrick Fitzgerald, Horse Feathers, Elliot Smith from the playlist.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. That all matters a great deal. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account. If you want to find the older ones I’ve moved them to the weekly playlist archive. So hit that link above and I’m sure you’ll find this playlist too.
